The critical state of the small abattoir sector is well documented and there’s a real risk that if the sector goes under then so will small-scale agroecological livestock farming. The government and regulatory agencies are dragging their feet on doing anything about it so how can farmers get involved and help safeguard their access to these critical bits of infrastructure? Are there any farmer-led models for improving access to this infrastructure? We’ll hear from a number of individuals and organisations working in this area, including Pasture for Life, Local Abattoirs R Key (LARK), the mobile abattoir project and abattoir owners and will actively seek ideas from the audience with the aim of leaving attendees with ideas to take away and implement in their areas.
