Priory Pots was established by Kate Charlton-Jones in a village north of Colchester, Essex in 2017. She learned to throw pots in Japan when she lived there for four years in the late 1980s. Having returned to England, she finally set up her own small pottery at home some years (and some children) later.
All Kate’s pots are hand-thrown on the wheel, predominantly in stoneware clay. The clays she uses are durable and are fired to a high temperature. She makes her own glazes and makes an ash glaze using wood ash from her burner: the wood burnt is predominantly fallen wood from her garden. Functionality is important to the products produced by Priory Pots and the designs are constantly being modified to enhance their practical use.
