Building public resilience to food system shocks

11:00 (60mins) – AFN Network+ PF C26

Prof Lang’s research for the National Preparedness Commission asks; “what would the UK public do” in the case of a food system failure? Other countries, including Sweden, are beginning to build ‘civic defence’ into their food systems, so that communities have the resilience to continue feeding themselves, if food chains fail. What might this mean for the UK? How has our social fabric changed since we last had to do this in WW2? And importantly – how can farmers play their vital roles in working with local people and building community resilience? Covid showed how critical farm shops were in crisis, and the next crisis may not be far off.

Alternative proteins, what’s in it for farmers & land use change?

15:00 (60mins) – AFN Network+ PF C26

Livestock production and alternative proteins are likely to sit increasingly side-by-side in the coming years, with alternative products taking greater market share than currently. The benefits of a broad rotation are widely known, and multiply with a flowering break crop that adds soil nitrogen and structure. We look at the benefits of protein crops, delving into soil science, investigating improvements to animal health and welfare and boosting the sustainability of UK food.

Farm bird surveys – how to track effects of conservation measures

17:00 (30mins) – BTO Stand (MS8)

Many farms are actively managing to enhance biodiversity, but lack evidence that what they are doing is working and the formal monitoring activity that would deliver it. However, evidence is important to show what is working and to feed back so that improvements can be made if needed. The British Trust for Ornithology has unique bird survey expertise and can provide a range of professional bird monitoring packages, from summaries of existing data to bespoke surveys and comparisons of on-farm changes to those shown by regional data. We can also advise on using bioacoustics. I will introduce the options and tell you how you can get involved.
