The viability of walnuts and hazelnuts as commodity crops

Agroforestry Tent (PF B20)

This session is born from a question: What can I grow which is high value, has low labour requirement and can yield reliably in a changing climate.
In the 20th century the UK had a domestic industry for walnuts and hazelnuts which was grubbed out in favour of the more highly mechanised cereal cropping system. Subsequently, producer countries have improved yield and entirely mechanised their production methods. We will discuss the barriers to entry, the market, the costs and the opportunities associated with both of these crops as well as their applicability into different farming systems
