“The Garden: Visionary Growers and Farmers of the Counterculture” is the story of the hippies’ love affair with agriculture. Starting with the counterculture’s discovery of Rudolf Steiner and the Organic movement, it then examines the harbingers of Self-sufficiency. At the book’s core is a study of the back-to-the-land movement. In chapters on Findhorn, Masanobu Fukuoka, and Permaculture; each are viewed against the counterculture. The background is that era’s discovery of non-western cultures, fears for the ecology, and the nascent concept of Ecopsychology. Matthew Ingram interviewed many of the original pioneers and summarises the history.
