Fraser Hugill is a director of the Beef Shorthorn Association farming approx. 400 acres in North Yorkshire. He also runs an environmental consultancy business, which is a member of the FWAG Association, supporting farmers and farmer clusters to implement regenerative practices. Fraser’s 55 cow pedigree Beef Shorthorn herd has been fully integrated into the arable rotation on land that has been fenced over the last 7 years supported by Stewardship grants. Three-year herbal leys are a key part of arable rotation, facilitating regenerative practices where things like cover crops are more challenging with the later harvests and heavier soil types.
Current animal genetics are owned and operated globally by very few companies who have created a small number of food animal breeds.
