Despite having no family connection to agriculture, Matthew decided farming would be a good career choice at a young age. After studying at Plumpton College he worked as a herdsman and a relief milker for a livestock services company. In 2017 Matthew took on the tenancy at Brays Farm, which he runs as a 52-acre microdairy. Matthew is passionate about producing good-quality milk and dairy products from happy cows grazing on their beautiful patch of the Surrey Hills. Matthew loves regenerative, nature-friendly farming and the vital role cows play in improving the health of our soil and aiding a healthy, functioning ecosystem.
Four new entrant farmers discuss their experiences of entering the sector, taking on new or family enterprises and navigating the obstacles of establishing regenerative systems. They’ll discuss starting up with low capital, access to land and finance, business planning, community involvement and what’s missing in giving more opportunities to new entrants.
