Sam Awdry

2024

Sam is a third generation farmer who transitioned in 2022 from a partnership in the family arable/beef farm to a tenancy with Laura, his wife, and 3 children on a Dutchy farm in Cornwall. They are establishing a resilient mixed farming system with the core goal of maintaining soil health and farm ecology. Having taken over a farm with significant soil health issues after intensive contract potato production He has used the tools of pasture diversity and extended recovery periods within the grazing system to help achieve their goals. Their livestock are fully integrated into arable rotations with both a grazing suckler herd and a contract calf rearing operation on the farm. Laura works off-farm as a farming knowledge exchange manager and balancing workloads at home and away with active family life is a key challenge of their holistic plan.
