Sam farms with his wife Claire and two children in Cumbria at Gowbarrow Hall Farm, where they manage Beef Shorthorn cattle, Kune Kune pigs and Fell ponies. They moved to Gowbarrow in 2017 and took over the farming operation after Claire’s grandparents had died. With help from Wilderculture CIC they changed the direction of the business from high input sheep farming to becoming Pasture-for-Life Certified for their beef enterprise in 2019.
The farm is now in organic conversion with OF&G, and they have just started a Higher Tier Stewardship scheme focused on restoring Species-Rich grassland, ancient Wood Pasture and Heather Moorland. All of the animals are out-wintered with minimal supplementary feed, the beef and pork is sold direct to customers, and they have started to sell leather products from the farm.
