The future of local and regenerative meat production depends on a viable network of small abattoirs and butchers. This session will explore how to revitalise the sector, protecting existing businesses and creating new abattoir provision. We will cover key issues including the need for more skilled workers, the value of by-products, the role of regulation and existing and future funding. There will be updates from the Abattoir Sector Group and Defra and we will hear from farmers taking action to ether save their local abattoir or set up a new one, exploring different models such as cooperative ownership, mobile or modular units and how farmers can work together to overcome some of the challenges.
